Design, Bees, and Big Magic
I’m Staysean—artist, educator, beekeeper, and lover of all things creative. This space is where I share my journey, insights into my art process, and a few sweet tales from my bee colonies. But before we dive in, let me tell you how I ended up with paint on my hands one minute and a beekeeper’s suit on the next.
I’ve been an artist all my life—starting with sketching cartoon characters during Saturday morning cartoons and copying my favorite comic book heroes. Later, I earned a degree in graphic design, worked at an ad agency, and eventually embraced freelance life—B.C.D. (Before Covid Days)—collaborating with local and international companies, illustrating children’s books, teaching art, and starting my own creative venture.
In 2018, while running Kraasimages, I had one of those Big Magic moments: Wouldn’t it be fun to have honey on demand? Curious, I did some research, booked a course with the Apiculture Unit in St. Catherine, and just like that, I was hooked. Two years, two swarms, and countless bee stings later, it’s still one of the best decisions I’ve made for my creative spirit and future self.
People always ask, “How did you get into beekeeping?” And honestly, my answer—“I was curious and wondered if I could”—never seems to satisfy them. But that’s really how it happened.
Beekeeping, like art, has taught me patience, problem-solving, and how to embrace the unexpected. In the classroom, I remind my students that creativity isn’t just about making things—it’s a way of seeing and responding to the world.
Now, I balance art and design, teaching, and growing my little bee colonies. After posting a few random bee photos on Instagram and getting so many questions, I realized it was time to start documenting more of my process.
